If I Could Turn Back Time…
When you think back to the 80’s, then most of us would remember legwarmers, bouffant hairdos and synth-laden tunes from the likes of icons such as Spandau Ballet, Duran Duran and Depeche Mode. It was a period of flamboyancy and glamour, with the guys wearing as much make-up as their female counterparts. If you were born in this era then you no doubt were entranced by ‘Back to the Future’, ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off’ and the timeless ‘Indiana Jones’ trilogy. Hilarious spoof sitcoms such as ‘Police Squad!- a spin-off from the highly popular ‘Naked Gun’ series of films- were considered to be absolute masterpieces as they never seem to get old even to this day. People like Leslie Nielson were widely regarded as comedic geniuses as belly laughs a-plenty were guaranteed whenever he appeared on screen, and his hare-brained escapades left everyone in stitches. Silly though it may be, ‘Police Cop!’ is still one of the most quotable and best-loved programmes ever made, and sits comfortably amongst classics like ‘Fawlty Towers’, ‘Blackadder’ and ‘The Young Ones’. Political satires also had sky-high ratings figures, as ‘Not The Nine O’Clock News’, ‘Yes Minister’ and ‘Spitting Image’ poked fun at government bigwigs and made us feel a little bit better about the state of the country as a whole. Margaret Thatcher was either loved or hated by the public, and no one dared to sit on the fence when it came to their thoughts on the Iron Lady. Divided opinions made for healthy debate, and we could all hold our own when the subject of the Prime Minister was brought up.
